Stress Design Engineer

About G3 Aerospace

G3 Aerospace is an AS9100 Rev D certified aerospace company based in Belgrade, Montana, with two separate business lines. Our engineering services group does contracted design and analysis for customers in commercial aircraft interiors, spacecraft interiors, and composite structures. Our manufacturing group builds to print for customers out of our 20,000 sq ft facility.

The Role

We are looking for a stress engineer with 2 to 5 years of experience who is just as comfortable working out a hand calc in Mathcad as running a FEM. You will also take on mechanical design work, so you will often own a part or assembly from concept through analysis and release. You will work on customer programs as part of our contracted engineering team, often working directly with customer engineering groups.

What You’ll Do

  • Perform static strength analysis of aerospace structures, interiors, and composite assemblies using hand calculations in Mathcad and finite element methods
  • Size joints, fasteners, fittings, lugs, inserts, and bonded connections
  • Analyze composite and sandwich panel structures, including facesheet, core, and insert failure modes
  • Build and run FEM models in FEMAP/NASTRAN and check the results against hand calcs
  • Write clear, traceable stress reports and substantiation documents for customer and certification review
  • Design and model parts and assemblies in CATIA V5, Creo, or SOLIDWORKS and create production drawings with GD&T
  • Design parts and assemblies with the customer’s manufacturing and producibility requirements in mind
  • Support customer design reviews (PDR/CDR), test planning, and certification activities

What You Bring

  • B.S. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (or equivalent)
  • 2 to 5 years of stress analysis experience in aerospace or a closely related industry
  • Strong grasp of classical hand analysis methods (Bruhn, Roark, Niu, MMPDS, or similar)
  • Proficiency in PTC Mathcad for building and documenting stress calculations
  • Working FEA experience, preferably FEMAP/NASTRAN
  • Mechanical design experience in a major CAD platform (CATIA V5, Creo, or SOLIDWORKS)
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and engineering drawing standards
  • Good written communication, especially for technical reports
  • Must be a U.S. Person as defined by ITAR

Nice to Have

  • Composite and sandwich structure analysis experience
  • Aircraft interiors experience (monuments, galleys, seats, lavatories) and familiarity with 14 CFR Part 25 requirements such as 25.561 and 16g dynamic loads
  • Experience with PLM systems (Windchill, Teamcenter, ENOVIA)
  • Python or Excel/VBA for automating calcs
  • Experience supporting structural testing

Why G3

  • Variety across customer programs in aircraft and spacecraft
  • A small team where your work has visible impact and you have room to grow
  • Benefits: health, dental, vision, 401(k), PTO, etc.
